Recent Work
Recent work has taken a different direction.
Cityscapes and urban scenes dominated my work for fifteen years. Then
came a sprinkling of other subjects, mostly drawn from my surroundings
or odd items of interest such as the ever-present piles of car parts. Of these,
the jumble of car related parts, the lighting of their shapes and angles holds
my current interest. Unfortunately the subject matter has not made me any
more popular with my current galleries!
Such is life.

"Badges"
20" x 16" - Oil on Canvas
This is a box of badges from various British cars. The source photo I
worked from was taken at the Beaulieu Autojumble some years ago.

"Box of Carbs"
36" x 36 1/2" - Oil on Canvas
SU Carburetors are the bane of many a British car owner. But they get
a bad rap and in truth aren't all that complicated. These old used carbs
were a gift several years ago for use as spare parts. I'd kept the box in my
basement, gathering dust and dryer lint, and each time I passed it I thought
what a nice still-life it might be. Finally, one day, I took it up to the
driveway and made some photos. And there you are!

"Bone's Carbies"
16" x 20" - Oil on Canvas
More SU carburators. This group was a part of Terry Bone's offerings at the
Autojumble and is one of a several smaller paintings I've worked on recently.

"TA Pistons" in progress
55" x 42" - Oil on Canvas
For some time I had wanted to do a painting of pistons with that nice
golden/brown oily look they have when they've first been removed from
the cylinders. After asking a number of 'car' friends if anyone had an engine
they'd just torn down I struck out and ended up doing a painting of old
dusty pistons. A year or so later I found myself having to do a rebuild on
my own car. As it turned out, these were exactly what I'd been looking for.

A detail from the finished painting above.
Aproximately 24" x 24" - Oil on Canvas

"Transmission Gears" in progress
16" x 20" - Oil on Canvas
A friend called one day to tell me he'd removed the gears from several
MGB transmissions and was scrapping the cases. The gears being worth
more than the cases and his business sells new and used parts so this would
save considerable storage space and also allow quick access to a needed
gear or internal part. I asked for photos of his pile of gears and this
painting began to take shape.
